Gratefulness: Praying our way to Wholeness
February 27, 2010
Saturday 9:30 - 3:30 pm
Presenter: Rev. Karen Lewis Foley
The medieval
mystic Meister Eckhart said if the only prayer you ever say is thank you, it is
enough. Gratitude may come more easily and naturally in times of comfort,

insecurity, and anxiety. We need to touch into our capacity for gratefulness in
order to be whole. We will spend time in both individual and group prayer and
reflection. We will be informed in part, by David Steindhl-Rast's Gratefulness:
The Heart of Prayer. Please bring writing materials. Fee: $45.00 Pre-register

writing has appeared in the Portland Press Herald's Religion and Values section,

Whether we are present with ourselves, another, or with God, the capacity for
conscious loving presence is our essential spiritual faculty. It is a faculty at

being. Today we will work with individual, partnered and group exercises that
enable us to discover and deepen our own capacity for conscious loving presence

Russian Icons: Art & Spirituality in the Russian Orthodox Church
March 14, 2010
Sunday 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Presenter: Sheila McCarthy
It is said that
in 988 Grand Prince Vladimir, searching for a unifying religion for his
disparate Slavic tribes, chose eastern Christianity from Byzantium because he
preferred the other worldly mysticism of the eastern liturgy with its music and
art. The realism of western (Roman) Christianity struck Vladimir as too mundane,
too worldly. As we view the masterpieces of the anonymous Russian iconographers,
we surely think "mystical" and "other worldly." What explains the deliberate
visual distortion which we associate with icons? We will look together at the
theories of iconography as well as the startling permanence of icon images in
Russian culture. Fee $15.00 Pre-register with fee by 3/5/10.
Sheila McCarthy,
Ph.D. earned a B.A. from Emmanuel College, an M.A. in Russian Studies from
Harvard University, and a Ph. D. in Russian Literature from Cornell University.
She has taught Russian language, literature, and culture for 40 years at
Antioch, Grinnell, and Colby colleges and has been traveling to the Soviet
Union/Russia since 1964 to conduct research and to coordinate study abroad
programs in Russia for American college students. Sheila served as Project
Scholar and Lecturer for the Maine Humanities Council Winter Weekend, which

Friday 7:00 pm - Sunday 1:00
pm
Presenter: Sr. Claudette Darisse
"Pray always,"
we have been told. This weekend retreat is an invitation to "Pray all ways." The
movement will be gentle. From moments of tranquility born of centering prayer,
we will 'pray' the Presence of God as captured through the eyes of a digital
camera. The rhythm will be from inner stillness to outer awareness and back to
our Center. Participants should come equipped with a digital camera. If you have
no camera, come with a sketch pad and pencil in order to 'picture your prayer.'
Come. Pray always. Pray all ways. Fee: $185.00 Pre-register with $100.00 deposit
by 4/23/10. Includes five meals (3 Saturday/2 Sunday).

laced with a deep sense of gratitude to creator God and an eagerness to share
